Polarizing Optics

A. Polarizer selection guide

1. Air-spaced polarizers like Glan-Taylor, Glan-Laser have widest transmission wavelength range and high damage threshold. Calcite Glan-Taylor polarizers can be used from 350-2300nm, while a-BBO Glan-Laser polarizers work from 190nm to 3500nm. a-BBO Glan-Laser polarizer has highest damage threshold among the polarizers.

2. Glan-Thompson polarizers tend to have higher extinction ratio and wider field angle than air spaced polarizers. However their transmission is limited by crytal absorption as well as cement layer. a-BBO and Calcite Glan-Thompson polarizers can be used from 220-3500nm and 350-2300nm respectively.

3. Wollaston and Rochon polarizers are designed to deviate one polarization from the other with a small angle. They have been used in sepectrometers as well as polarization analyzers.

B. Comparing of a-BBO, Calcite and MgF2 Polarizer

Calcite has been commonly used to make polarizers such as Glan-Taylor, Glan-Laser, Glan Thompson, Wollaston, Rochon prisms because of its large birefringence. Calcite crystal has good transmission in the range of 350-2300nm. When the wavelength goes to UV or IR, MgF2 Rochon prism was usually used though it has small birefringence and therefore a small separation angle. However, the situation has changed when a-BBO, a synthetic birefringent crystal, is commercially available these years. Compare to Calcite crystal, a-BBO has a wider transparent spectral range(190nm-3500nm), higher damage threshold and better optical homogeneity. Compare to MgF2, a-BBO has much larger birefringence as well as excellent physical property. Therefore, a-BBO will be a good substitution of Calcite and MgF2 crystal to make polarizer prisms. Following table list the Comparing of a-BBO, Calcite and MgF2 Crystal:
